Part of the midbrain, or mesencephalon, just above the |pons|, features two portions which protrude laterally, one portion extending beneath each ~hemisphere~ of the |cerebrum|. These protrusions are called the crus cerebri, or cerebral peduncules, and the triangular area between and beneath the protrusions is known as the interpeduncular space.
